The story behind this blend

DEFEND is rooted in one of the oldest aromatic traditions on record. During the time of the plague in medieval Europe, a recipe known as Four Thieves Vinegar circulated among those who believed certain botanicals could fortify the body and clear the air around them. The formula varied by region and era, but clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary appeared consistently at its center. People carried these plants, burned them, wore them. The belief in their power was not incidental. It was the whole point.

DEFEND follows that same lineage. Clove, cinnamon cassia, eucalyptus, and rosemary form the core of the blend, the same botanicals that have been used for this purpose for centuries. White sage, grown on a small California farm, was added for its own long history as a cleansing and clarifying plant, a tradition that runs through Indigenous cultures of the American Southwest and predates any commercial aromatics market by generations. We use cultivated white sage specifically, not wildcrafted, out of respect for both the plant and those traditions.

The white sage in DEFEND is cultivated on a small California farm under sustainable conditions, not wildcrafted. We chose it for both reasons, and we think both are worth saying out loud.
